What Am I Grateful For?

In this time of turmoil, foreign and domestic, we can look at the glass half (or more) empty, Iran, Korea, worldwide economic slump, resurgent Russian expansionism, deficits, foreclosures, you can see as much as you want looking in that direction.

We do get to look in the direction we want; we have the power to direct our thoughts.

In no particular order, counting my blessings:

That I live in the United States, which established a holiday to give thanks, to our Creator.

The tradition started with the Pilgrims, we all know the story.

In 1863, not the best of times, as the outcome of the Civil War was far from clear, President Lincoln issued a proclamation that the nation observe the last Thursday in November “as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.”

The bill making the 4th Thursday in November the official Thanksgiving holiday was signed by President Roosevelt on December 26, 1941.

So, do we have more to be thankful for than Americans at those times?

I do.

My health is much better than I deserve, given my history.

I am physically able to do all the things I love to do, fish, hunt, watch college football games.

And I get to shoot with one of my daughters tomorrow morning, and hunt in the afternoon, thanks to the generosity of one of my many friends.

I am blessed with friends, who make time for me, and respect a confidence, from Los Angeles to New York to down the street.

I will be with upwards of 200 folks at 7:00 Thanksgiving morning, at a Church that is 5 minutes from my home, thanking God for our blessings.

I have not one, but two, family feasts to attend, family where we all speak to each other, there are no feuds, and love overcomes personality conflicts.

Both my daughters are home and safe and brilliant and beautiful and, most of all, have God in their lives.

My wife has stayed with me over 26 years, making possible so much else for which I am grateful..

I have received mercy in my life, and not justice.

People whom I did not know, who owed me nothing, showed me how God had changed their lives, and now, he has changed mine.

“In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you and Christ Jesus.”  (1 Thes 5:18)
